About Vlissingen

Known for

Michiel de Ruyter

Known for

naval shipyards

Known for

Scheldt estuary

Vlissingen looks out over the mouth of the Scheldt from the southern shore of Walcheren, with the North Sea on one side and the shipping lane to Antwerp passing almost close enough to touch. That position has shaped daily life for centuries: herring and fishing, trade and privateering, and the yards on the Scheldt where most of the Royal Netherlands Navy's ships are built.

The Keizersbolwerk is where the town comes to watch the water, and the statue of Michiel de Ruyter, who was born here, keeps watch with it. A short walk away, De Gevangentoren and the MuZEEum hold the older stories, while the new Scheldekwartier fills the space the old shipyard left in the centre. In Zeelandic the town is Vlissienge, and you still hear it.

If you grew up with salt on the wind and ships sliding past the end of the street, you already know which corner of this map is yours.
