Nieuwe Maas
On the edge of Vlaardingen, a skeleton from around 1300 BC yielded the oldest human DNA found anywhere in the Netherlands. The town that grew up here later stood on the north bank of the Nieuwe Maas, where the old harbour began life as a stream called De Vlaarding.
The centre still sits beside that harbour. The Zeillogger V92 Balder is a reminder of the herring fleet that made Vlaardingen the region's great fishing port, and Museum Vlaardingen keeps the story of the sea. Daily life runs between the Oude Haven, the busy streets of the centre and the green corners of the Broekpolder, with Schiedam and Rotterdam to the east and Maassluis to the west. The Historisch molenerf Babbersmolen adds a windmill to the skyline, and the Geuzenmonument recalls 1574, when the Watergeuzen burnt the town on the orders of William of Orange.
On the Grote Visserijplein, the Vissersmonument by Govert van Brandwijk remembers the fishermen who never came home: a fitting image for a town that has always looked to the water.
