Plural name
Lake Toisvesi
Killinkoski mill
Down at Keskustan ranta, the town beach, Lake Toisvesi comes right up to the centre of Virrat, and Rantapuisto follows the shore beside it. Virrat is the only municipality in Finland with a plural name, so in Finnish you live on it rather than in it, and anyone from here is a virtolainen.
The town sits in the far north of Pirkanmaa, well north of Tampere, where the region meets South Ostrobothnia and Central Finland. Lake Tarjanne marks its border with Mänttä-Vilppula and Ruovesi, and beyond the town the municipality is mostly countryside: Killinkoski, which grew up around a wool mill turned groundwood mill, Vaskivesi, Kotala, Liedenpohja and Härkönen. Days and nights swing further in temperature here than anywhere else in Pirkanmaa.
Everyday life keeps a steady pace: the beach, Kutunpuisto, a walk in the forest by Siekkisjärvi. There is even a crater on Mars that carries the town's name. If Virrat is where you come from, wear the shoreline of Toisvesi and let people ask you about that plural.
