Peer Gynt Festival
Vinstra lies where the Vinstra river, flowing down from the lake Vinstre, joins the Gudbrandsdalslågen in the middle of the Gudbrandsdalen valley. Its claim to history is literary: Peder Olsen Hågå from Vinstra was the model for the main character in Henrik Ibsen's Peer Gynt, and each year since 1967 the Peer Gynt Festival has been held on the Hågå farm, with an open-air performance of the play. A monument to Peer Gynt stands in the old cemetery at Sødorp.
The town sits on the main route through the valley, with the E6 and the Dovrebanen railway both passing through, and the Peer Gynt Road leading south through Gålå to Lillehammer. Vinstra was made a town in 2013 and celebrated for three days.
For anyone who grew up here, the map is the valley floor: the river beach at Eiesand, Stasjonsparken by the station, and the rivers meeting at the heart of town.
