Villeneuve-d'Ascq is the cradle of the VAL, the world's first automatic driverless metro, and it still moves to the rhythm of its trains, its campuses and its students. Days here run between the Cité scientifique, the lakes and the parks, with the Stade Pierre-Mauroy filling up on match nights and the LaM drawing visitors from across the Lille area.
Ask anyone who studied here and they will mention the green first. The 'green technopole' keeps lakes, woods and farmland within its boundaries, and the Parc du Héron is where weekends tend to drift. The Château de Flers and the Musée des Moulins hold on to an older side of the town, from before Ascq, Annappes and Flers merged into one, and the Tertre des Massacrés keeps the memory of the Ascq massacre.
