Ski flying hill
Tyrifjorden
Museum railway
Have you ever stood below Vikersundbakken and watched a ski flyer come down the largest ski flying hill in the world? Then you have seen the thing Vikersund is best known for, and the reason world records keep being broken here.
The village sits at the southwestern end of the Tyrifjorden, where the water leaves the fjord through Vikerfossen into Bergsjøen. Hønefoss lies to the north and Drammen to the southeast, and Vikersund station connects it all by rail. For a long time timber was floated out through these falls and down the Drammenselva, and the village grew on pulp and paper. Today the old Krøderbanen runs as a museum railway towards Krøderen, Tyrifjord hotell looks across the water at the jumping hills, and the ruins of Vike church lie just to the east.
Whether you come back for the World Cup or just for the view of the fjord from Fjordparken, Vikersund is the kind of place that is still home the moment you step off the train.
