Seaside promenade
Have you ever watched the papier-mâché floats of the Carnival roll along the Passeggiata a mare, with the sea on one side and the Apuan Alps behind? That is Viareggio at its loudest. The rest of the year it is a seaside town of Liberty-style buildings, boatyards, fishing boats and flower growers.
It lies on the flat coastal plain of Versilia in northern Tuscany, facing the Ligurian Sea, with Lake Massaciuccoli inland and the Burlamacca canal running through the town to the harbour. North of the port come the beach clubs and the pinewood of the Pineta di Ponente; to the south, the dunes of the Lecciona stay wild inside a natural park.
The oldest building in town, the Torre Matilde Museo Multimediale della Città di Viareggio, was raised in 1541 against corsairs, when this was Lucca's only port. Wearing Viareggio means wearing that tower and the shoreline it was built to guard.
