Tresfjord Bridge

Stand by the narrow channel where Flatevågen meets the Tresfjorden and you are in the middle of Vestnes, at the one spot where the village's two halves almost touch. The village, also known as Helland, lies on the western shore of the Tresfjorden, close to where that fjord empties into the Romsdalsfjord, with the E39 running alongside.

What makes Vestnes unusual is that it is built on two peninsulas with the bay of Flatevågen between them, joined to the open fjord only by a channel barely seventy metres wide. Water shapes every journey from here. The car ferry to Molde leaves from Furneset just north of the village, express boats run to Vikebukt, Sekken and Molde, and since 2015 the Tresfjord Bridge has carried the E136 across to Vikebukt, saving the long drive around the fjord. On land there is a shopping centre, a tradition of boatbuilding with a museum of its own, and Vestnes Church, a wooden church on the site where a stave church once stood. Hagneset friområde and the nature reserve on Feøya lie close by.

If you grew up looking across the water at Vikebukt, you already know the shape of this map by heart.
