Kasteel Biljoen

Known for

King's Day market

Leafy villa parks, with the wooded hills of the Veluwezoom rising right behind them, are what Velp is famous for. The village lies just east of Arnhem in the municipality of Rheden, separated from the city by the A12 and bordered by Rozendaal and Rheden.

Kasteel Biljoen is the landmark most people picture first, a castle on the edge of the village where classic cars gather on King's Day. The old core around the Oude Jan, a church dating from the twelfth century, holds nineteenth-century villas and quieter streets, and the listed Villapark Overbeek shows how the well-to-do once settled here. North of the village the Emmapiramide crowns the hills, with the Beekhuizense Bossen and Kasteel Rosendael close by. Velp was first recorded as Pheleppe, and in the nineteenth century a hoard of Merovingian gold was dug up here. Summer brings the Velleper Donderdagen to the Hoofdstraat, and every year the King's Day market grows into the largest private market in the east of the country.

Walking back down from the hills to the familiar streets, Velp always feels like coming home.
