Vejle Fjord
Forested hills
Vejle Vindmølle
Long before Vejle had a harbour, travellers crossed the wetlands west of town on the Ravning Bridge, a wooden boardwalk from the Viking Age. The town itself began on a small islet held between Omløbsåen, Mølleåen and the Vejle river, and its name comes from the Old Danish wæthel, a ford. It grew into a prominent market town that traded with Lübeck, Aarhus and Flensburg.
Today Vejle sits at the head of Vejle Fjord, where the valleys of the Vejle and Grejs rivers meet, and it is known for its forested hills, its wetlands, its harbour, its shopping street, its windmill and its new, award-winning architecture. There is a feeling of being held here, with hills on either side and the fjord ahead. Fjordenhus, Vejle Kunstmuseum and Byparken are part of the map, and the town is home to the administration of the Region of Southern Denmark.
If you grew up climbing these hills or walking the harbour on a Sunday, wear Vejle, from Vejle Vindmølle to the fjord, and you will know exactly where you are from.
