Vatne is known first of all as a name with a history: it was once a municipality of its own in Møre og Romsdal, and Vatne Church still carries that name in the village today.
The village lies in Møre og Romsdal, with the peaks of Grøtshornet and Ramnfloget nearby. There are other places called Vatne in Norway, in Gulen and in Sandnes, and Vatne is a family name as well, but this is the one in Møre og Romsdal, a settlement of a couple of thousand people where the church and the mountains are the fixed points. The municipality is gone, but the name has stayed with the village.
