Jæren Line station
Trausk nickname
Rich farmland
A train pulls in at Varhaug Station, and around the platform lies the whole village: houses and shops that are here because the Jæren Line stopped here. Before the station opened in 1878 this stretch of Jæren was nothing but farms. Afterwards people settled around the station, and Varhaug has grown steadily ever since.
Ask anyone from Varhaug about home and sooner or later they will mention the neighbours. The village lies between Nærbø and Vigrestad, and the three live in a love-hate relationship; there is no one more important to beat on the football pitch. Officially a person from here is a Varhaugsbu, but the old Jæren nickname Trausk, meaning frog or toad, has stuck, and it is one of the few village nicknames still in use.
Varhaug is the administrative centre of Hå Municipality and the highest village in it, sitting between 40 and 60 metres up, a couple of kilometres from the North Sea. All around it is farmland so valuable to the country's food supply that how far the village may grow is a hot topic in the local papers.
The station is what put Varhaug on the map in the first place. This one is for every Trausk who caught a train from that platform and came back again.
