the garden city
Sacro Monte
Lake Varese
Outside the Palazzo Estense, Varese lives up to the name it is known by: the garden city. Between the eighteenth and early twentieth centuries noble families, and later industrialists from Milan, built villas with parks across its seven hills, and many of them still shape the map today.
Walk through Varese and you feel a quieter, greener Lombardy than the plain to the south. The Sacro Monte di Varese rises behind the city, part of the Campo dei Fiori range, with the medieval sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte reached along the avenue of chapels. Lake Varese lies below. Villa Panza and the Civici Musei di Villa Mirabello, Archeologico e Risorgimentale keep the villa tradition alive as places to visit, while the Torre di Velate stands watch on the slope. Garibaldi fought the Austrians nearby, and the town later prospered on machinery, textiles and shoes.
It is also one of the rainiest cities in Italy, which explains the green. Picture the view from the Sacro Monte on a clear morning: lake, hills, rooftops and, far off, the haze over Milan.
