On the stone bridge over Vammaskoski, the rapids of the Kokemäenjoki, the two halves of Vammala meet. The bridge was built to join the river banks and was later widened, and it has carried the town's daily comings and goings ever since. The railway station still looks much as it did when the line opened, and the local paper, Tyrvään Sanomat, is the oldest in Finland. Koskipuisto and Kaalisaari give the centre its green spaces.

What sets Vammala apart is its love of books. Vanhan kirjallisuuden päivät, the Days of Old Literature, has made the name known across the country, and Suomalaisen kirjan museo Pukstaavi tells the long story of the Finnish book. Akseli Gallen-Kallela and Mauri Kunnas are both linked to the town, and Herra Hakkaraisen talo is among its sights. Today the old town is the centre of Sastamala.

If you grew up between the bridge and the bookstalls, this is your map: find the rapids, and you will find your own way home from there.
