Every design for Værløse

Værløse sits on the north-western edge of Copenhagen, between the lakes of Farum Sø to the north and Søndersø to the south, with forest wrapping around it on three sides. It is a town of the S-train: modern Værløse grew up around Værløse station, and the small centre of apartment blocks and shops still gathers there, with the town hall of Furesø just to the north. Beyond it spread quiet streets of detached houses and terraced homes.

Many here remember the suburb in the making, the decades when the little railway village of Lille Værløse grew fivefold as Copenhagen spread outwards. Older still is Kirke Værløse to the west, the original village of the parish, now almost joined to the town. In the oldest records it is Vetherløsa maklæ, a name that speaks of a great grazing clearing.

And then there is the former air base, Flyvestation Værløse, the first in Denmark, now largely open land for walking. A summer swim at Furesøbad, an afternoon at Værløse Museum, the forest path home from the station: that is the map of Værløse.
