Kven heritage
Vadsø is known for the airship mast on Vadsøya and for living in three languages: in Northern Sami the town is Čáhcesuolu, in Kven it is Vesisaari. It lies on the southern shore of the Varanger Peninsula, facing the wide Varanger Fjord, and part of it sits on the island of Vadsøya, joined to the mainland by a bridge.
Vadsøya naturpark lies out on that island, and there stands the mast that Roald Amundsen and Umberto Nobile used for their flight over the North Pole in the airship Norge. Back on the mainland, the old wooden houses Esbensengården and Tuomainengården came through the wartime air raids, unlike so much of Finnmark, and Innvandrermonumentet recalls the settlers who arrived from Finland and northern Sweden. In summer the midnight sun stays above the horizon for weeks; in winter comes the polar night.
If you grew up here, the map holds it all: the parallel streets climbing the slope, the bridge out to Vadsøya and those summer nights when the light never left.
