Open farmland

Urjala lies in Pirkanmaa, close to Forssa and south of Tampere, where wide open fields run on into the neighbouring municipalities. The land is mostly flat, broken by single hills and by a long ridge that crosses the municipality from north-west to south-east, with broad bogs along its flanks. Most of the water gathers in the Tarpianjoki, whose waterway links lakes such as Kortejärvi, Rutajärvi and Nuutajärvi.

Many people feel they know Urjala before they arrive, through the writer Väinö Linna, who was born here even if Tampere usually claims him. The village of Nuutajärvi is home to the oldest glassworks in Finland, and its craft has carried the name of the lake far beyond the parish. Older layers lie close by: the Nuutajärven linnavuori hillfort, a stone sacristy that survives from the medieval church at Urjalankylä, and the memorial stone on Huhdinkallio, where a reserve company was once stationed.

In the middle of all this is Hannunpuisto, a small green park that locals pass without a second thought. That is exactly why it belongs on a shirt: it is the part of Urjala only people from Urjala would recognise.
