Where do you go first when you come back to Unna? For many it is the old town around Burg Unna, where the Hellwegmuseum tells the story of a place that grew rich on an ancient trade route.

Burg Unna stands as a reminder that Unna was once a Hanseatic trading centre on the Westphalian Hellweg, a road whose trade reached as far as London. A mint was set up here in the fourteenth century, and around seventy gold coins buried in those years were found during excavation work in 1952. Later came coal mining, the spa town of Königsborn with its mineral springs, and today the Zentrum für internationale Lichtkunst gives the town a landmark of a very different kind.

Unna sits on the eastern edge of the Ruhr, close enough to Dortmund to be home to many commuters and close enough to the Sauerland for long walks. Whether your Unna is Massen, Königsborn or one of the Hellweg villages to the east, this map is for you.
