Ulsteinvik means Ulstein cove, and the name says it all: a natural harbour on the west side of Hareidlandet, the island once known as Hod, that grew into a shipbuilding town. Ulstein Verft and Kleven Verft have built many of the ships that sail the Hurtigruten, and the X-bow was developed here. The rock underfoot is special too: Ulsteinvik has rich deposits of rare eclogite, which has drawn researchers from around the world, the Apollo astronaut Harrison Schmitt among them.

The ruins of Ulstein kirke recall an older parish, while the Sjøborg theatre on the waterfront shows films and stage acts. Out towards Flø there are beaches, Osnesanden among them, and the bay at Lyngnesvika, and the town even has spots good enough for surfing. Then there is Hødd, playing at Høddvoll, national cup winners after beating Tromsø, and Ulsteinvik is also the hometown of the hurdler Karsten Warholm.

If you grew up here, the map is Vik, the shipyards and the stands at Høddvoll, and the summer evenings on rådhusplassen during Trebåtfestivalen.
