Capital of Friuli
Castle hill
Venetian heritage
From the hilltop beside the Castello di Udine the city lies flat in every direction, which is exactly what makes the hill a puzzle. Legend says Attila had his soldiers carry earth there in their helmets and shields so that he could watch Aquileia burn; recent excavations have confirmed that the mound is indeed man-made. Udine is the historic capital of Friuli, first recorded in AD 983, when Emperor Otto II gave the castle of Utinum to the Patriarchs of Aquileia.
The Loggia del Lionello, down in the square below, belongs to the long Venetian chapter: Venice took the city in 1420 and held it until 1797, and Udine was the second-largest city in its state. Through the Arco Bollani and around the Palazzo Patriarcale (o Arcivescovile), now home to the Museo Diocesano e Gallerie del Tiepolo, the patriarchs' Udine and the Venetians' Udine overlap. The city answers to more than one name, too: Udin in Friulian, Videm in Slovene, between the Adriatic and the Carnic Alps.
If you grew up between the Cormor and the Torre, or Friuli is simply where you feel you belong, this map is yours: the hill in the middle, and every street turning around it.
