Town status

Tynset is the town with the world's biggest kicksled. Verdens Største Spark stands on the square in front of the town hall, a giant version of the spark that Norwegians know from childhood, and it is hard to think of Tynset without it. The town is the administrative centre of Tynset Municipality in Innlandet, and it has been a town in name too since the municipal council voted for town status in 2020.

Coming back to Tynset means following the river Glåma up the valley until the houses gather on its banks, halfway between the villages of Alvdal and Tolga. The centre is compact, ringed by residential streets, with the smaller villages of Fåset to the southwest and Telneset to the northeast close enough to count as neighbours. Tynset Church stands in the town, and the valley's past is kept at Museumssenteret Ramsmoen and Tynset bygdemuseum.

On the map, the Glåma draws its line straight through town. Anyone who has stood on the square in front of the town hall knows where Verdens Største Spark waits, even though no map marks it, and that is reason enough to wear it.
