Tyskie beer
GKS Tychy
planned city
Tychy is known far beyond Silesia for its beer. The Książęcy Brewery has been brewing here since 1629, the Tyskie brand goes back to the 17th century, and the Muzeum Tyskich Browarów Książęcych tells the whole story. The city's other passion is ice hockey, thanks to GKS Tychy, one of Poland's accomplished clubs.
What makes Tychy unusual is how new most of it is. First documented in 1467 as a small farming settlement on the trade route between Oświęcim and Mikołów, it grew rapidly from 1950 under post-war planning meant to spread out the population of industrial Upper Silesia. Its name comes from the Polish cichy, 'quiet', which sounds a little ironic today. Older layers survive in the Pałac Promnitzów and the Kościół pw. Świętej Marii Magdaleny, and the Pomnik Walki i Pracy, nicknamed the Żyrafa, is the city's best-known silhouette.
Coming back means the Gostynia, the forests that close in on three sides and a city built from scratch for the people who still call it theirs.
