Lake Road
Artists' colony
Kellokoski ironworks
Tuusula is known for its lake road, Tuusulan rantatie, an open-air museum of villas and artists' homes along the eastern shore of Tuusulanjärvi. Aleksis Kivi spent the last part of his life in a small cottage by the water, now Aleksis Kiven kuolinmökki, and painters and writers such as Pekka Halonen and Juhani Aho later followed him to the lake.
Day to day, Tuusula is a municipality that has never called itself a town, despite outnumbering many that do. Life gathers in Hyrylä, which grew up around a Russian garrison during the Crimean War and has been rebuilt since the air defence regiment moved out; Ilmatorjuntamuseo, the anti-aircraft museum, keeps that military past in view. In the north, Kellokoski grew around an ironworks and Jokela around the railway, and the commute into Helsinki runs along the Tuusulanväylä motorway.
The coat of arms sums the place up neatly: a laurel branch for the artists by the lake, and a wheellock borrowed from the Stålhane family, who long held sway here.
