Historic wooden station

Kalpalinna slopes
Turenki is known for its railway station, the oldest surviving wooden station building in Finland, put up for the country's very first line between Helsinki and Hämeenlinna. The village lies in the Häme countryside a short way south-east of Hämeenlinna and is the main centre of Janakkala, a municipality of sandy ridges where the rare Pulsatilla patens, the local flower, still grows and the lynx is the chosen emblem.
Kalpalinna, the ski centre right on the edge of the village, fills with skiers in winter, while summer belongs to Ahilammen uimaranta and Lastujärven uimaranta. Turengin junaturman muistomerkki recalls the most destructive train accident in Finnish history, which happened here, and the Suomenajokoirapatsas honours the Finnish hound. Industry shaped the place as well: a sugar factory drew beet growers to the area, and the ice-cream factory first opened by Valio still runs today.
If you grew up in Turenki, the map brings it all back: trains passing the old station, ski days at Kalpalinna, and the factory everybody in the village knew by name.
