Turek first appears in the records as Turcoviste, a property of the archbishops of Gniezno named in a papal bull of Innocent II, and it remained a church town after receiving its town rights. It lies in the Sieradz Land, in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, where the roads to Konin, Łódź and Sieradz meet, and Fryderyk Chopin once travelled through it.

For many families here, home was shaped by lignite. Turek grew into the second largest industrial centre of the Konin lignite basin, and the Adamów mine and power station supplied electricity to the country and heat to part of the town. The power station has since closed and a new gas-fired plant is being built, but the memory of those working years stays with the town. Turek also remembers darker times: during the German occupation its Polish residents were expelled and its Jewish community was almost entirely destroyed, and the county's murdered teachers have their own memorial. Brighter corners include the Park Tura and the colourful Murale on the town's walls.

The Muzeum Miasta Turku im. Józefa Mehoffera, with the Ławeczka Józefa Mehoffera nearby, is where the town tells its own story – a fine reason to wear the place that shaped yours.
