Tromsø stands on the island of Tromsøya in the Tromsøysundet strait, just off the mainland of Northern Norway, joined to Tromsdalen by the Tromsø Bridge and to Kvaløya by the Sandnessund Bridge. People have lived in the area since the end of the last ice age, and Norse and Sámi heritage runs deep here.

For many, Tromsø brings back the feeling of standing on the edge of the map. It has been a trading town, a lively place to go out and a starting point for expeditions into the Arctic, which is why it is still called the 'Gateway to the Arctic'. The centre holds more old wooden houses than anywhere else in Northern Norway, and Tromsø domkirke stands among them. M/S Polstjerna and Tromsø museum keep the past close, and across the strait Tromsdalen kirke faces the city.

Anyone who has walked from the old wooden houses down to the strait, with Tromsdalen kirke on the far shore, knows why Tromsø is a place worth carrying with you.
