Wahner Heide
Two rivers
Long before there was a Troisdorf, there were Eschmar and Sieglar, two settlements named in records more than a thousand years ago, and an old chapel at Bergheim even earlier. Troisdorf itself first turns up as Truhtesdorf in a charter of the Benedictine abbey at Siegburg, and it only became a town in the last century, gathering up its neighbours to form the twelve districts it has today.
Burg Wissem is where many people's sense of the place begins. The former knight's seat stands at the edge of the woods close to the centre, and inside it is the Bilderbuchmuseum, Europe's only museum devoted to picture books. Troisdorf has a habit of welcoming people too: families from Turkey, Greece and later Eastern Europe made their homes here, and the town set up Germany's first advisory council for foreign citizens.
To the north, the Wahner Heide opens out into heathland and woods, with the Telegraphenberg as its high point. To the south, the Agger slides into the Sieg within the town itself, the two rivers meeting among the meadows of the Siegauen.
