Habsburg seaport

Why would a city take its nicknames from the wind? Trieste is the Città della bora and the Città del vento, and anyone who grew up here knows exactly why, having leaned into that cold gust on the seafront more times than they can count.

What sets Trieste apart is where it stands: at the head of its gulf, on a narrow strip of Italy between the Adriatic and Slovenia, at the point where Latin, Slavic and Germanic cultures meet. For centuries it belonged to the Habsburgs and grew into their most important seaport, which is why people still call it Vienna by the sea, and the city of coffee. Today it has more researchers per head than anywhere else in Europe. You can walk out along the Molo Audace, look up at the Faro della Vittoria on the hill, or sit among the stones of the Teatro Romano, a reminder of the Roman town of Tergeste.

Triestini scattered around the world tend to describe home in the same way: the sea in front, the Carso behind, and a wind that lets you know you are back.
