Oldest city in Germany
Trier is known as Germany's oldest city, founded by the Romans as Augusta Treverorum and, for a while, one of the four capitals of the Roman Empire. What makes it special is how ordinary all that antiquity feels when you live with it.
The Porta Nigra, dark and massive, is the picture everyone carries of Trier, and locals pass it as casually as a bus stop. Nearby stand the Dom St. Peter zu Trier and the Liebfrauenkirche, two of the medieval buildings on the World Heritage list, , along with the Konstantinbasilika, the Kaiserthermen, the Amphitheater and the Römerbrücke over the Moselle. The city lies in a valley between low, vine-covered hills of red sandstone, near the border with Luxembourg and right in the Moselle wine region, so a glass of the local wine is never far away. The university keeps the town young, and Luxembourg is close enough for a day out.
If you grew up in Trier, Roman stones were your playground and the Moselle your summer. Find your street on the map, somewhere between the gate and the river.
