Venetian walls
Treviso grew up on three low rises beside the Sile, in a plain where spring-fed rivers well up out of the ground and run straight through town. One reading of the name, Ter-visi, points to those three hills, today the Piazza Duomo, the Piazza dei Signori and the Piazza Sant'Andrea. Around them, the city has built a name that travels far: this is the original home of Prosecco and of radicchio, it claims tiramisù as its own, and its province is the base of Benetton, De'Longhi and Pinarello.
For anyone who knows it well, Treviso feels like water heard rather than seen: the canals of the Botteniga slipping under little bridges, the Isola della Pescheria sitting in the middle of them, the Sile running along the southern walls. Above the arcades rise the Palazzo dei Trecento and the Torre civica di Treviso, and nearby stand the Loggia dei Cavalieri and the Fontana delle Tette. Only a few thousand people actually live inside the Venetian walls, but the whole city feels it belongs to them.
If you grew up here, this map holds the circuit of le Mura, walked or cycled a thousand times, with the sound of the canals never far away.
