Medieval sea law
Romanesque cathedral
Swabian castle
In 1063, Trani issued the Ordinamenta et consuetudo maris, the oldest surviving maritime law code of the Latin West. By then the town was the busiest port on the Adriatic, well placed for the Crusades, with traders from Amalfi, Pisa and Venice settled along its quays and one of the largest Jewish communities in southern Italy.
Trani lies on the Adriatic coast north-west of Bari, wrapped around a small natural inlet that has always served as its harbour. The land behind is almost flat, planted with olives, almonds and the vines of Moscato di Trani, and the pale local limestone, quarried nearby, built the old town. Frederick II built the massive Castello svevo, the Romanesque cathedral marks the skyline, and the Sinagoga Museo Sant'Anna recalls the medieval Jewish quarter. The Villa Comunale is the town's public garden.
Wear the map and you carry that castle with you: stone walls, the harbour beside them, and centuries of sea trade in a single view.
