Mont Faron
Toulon spreads along a great natural harbour at the eastern end of the Gulf of Lion, pressed between the Mediterranean and the Monts toulonnais, with Mont Faron rising straight up behind the rooftops.
Living here brings a particular feeling: the sea is never out of sight, and neither is the navy. Grey warships sit in the roadstead, and the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle calls Toulon home along with the rest of the French Mediterranean Fleet. Ferries leave for Corsica, the Zénith and the Théâtre Liberté fill up at night, and Mont Faron watches over all of it. Students, sailors and families share a city that is rooted in work and in the sea, without the gloss of the resorts further along the coast.
At the water's edge stands the Tour Royale, one of the forts that still watch over the harbour, while the Musée National de la Marine Toulon tells the story of the ships that came and went. Wear Toulon and you wear that harbour, its forts and its stubborn, salty pride.
