Vesuvius
Torre del Greco is wedged between the slopes of Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples, with the national park above it and the sea at its feet. Whole districts stand on old lava, and the beach along the Litoranea is dark volcanic sand.
Villa Sora sets the tone: the excavated remains of a grand Roman seaside villa, terraced down to the shore, with the terme romane on the beach below. Life today is less patrician. The little seafaring quarter of Portosalvo keeps the nautical club and the harbour, workshops still carve coral and cameos as the town has for centuries, and locals are called Corallini for it. Inland, the Circumvesuviana railway and Villa Campolieto are as much part of the everyday picture.
