Cellulose mill
Polar ship Maud
Osmotic power
Tofte is the factory village of the Hurum peninsula. A cellulose mill opened on the old Tofte farm at the end of the nineteenth century, a second followed at Sagene, and for more than a hundred years the two shaped every part of life here, from the houses built for the workers to the clubs and brass bands they founded.
Polarskipet Maud gave Tofte a new kind of fame. Roald Amundsen's polar ship, salvaged in Canada, was repaired just outside the village before going on public display. Before that, Tofte had made history of another kind, when Statkraft built the world's first osmotic power plant here and Crown Princess Mette-Marit came to open it.
Around it all lie the Oslofjord and some of the mildest weather in Norway, with Apotekerstranda and Preisserstranda on the shore and Vardåsen above. For anyone from Tofte, this is the shape of home.
