Flower Quarter

Cars swing off Viborgvej into the car park at Bilka, the largest store of its kind in Denmark, while on the northern side of the road Tilst gets on with its own life. This suburban area of Aarhus, to the northwest of the city, has big blocks and traditional suburban streets, a local school in Tilst Skole, Langkær Gymnasium og HF for older students, and the sports club Idrætsforeningen Tst at the centre of things.

What makes Tilst its own place is its mix. Many ethnic groups call the suburb home, and its neighbourhoods each have their own character. Blomsterkvarteret, the Flower Quarter near the lake of Geding Sø, has every street named after a flower. Tilst Kirke, founded in the twelfth century, is among the oldest churches in Scandinavia, and out in the landscape lie the manor of Kjærbygaard and Egecirklen.

If you grew up here, the map holds it all: the walk to Tilst Skole, an afternoon by Geding Sø and the road down to Bilka – one corner of Aarhus that was always yours.
