About Terni

Known for

The Steel City

Known for

Saint Valentine

Known for

Cascate delle Marmore

Stand before La pressa da 12000 t, a steel press kept on show in the town, and there is no doubt where you are. Terni is the Steel City, whose works arrived in the nineteenth century and pulled it into Italy's Second Industrial Revolution, and it remains an industrial hub today. It is also the City of Lovers: Saint Valentine was born here, became its bishop and lies in the basilica-sanctuary.

The town sits on the plain of the Nera in the south of Umbria, near the border with Lazio, where the river meets the Serra stream — the Romans called it Interamna, between two rivers. Around it rise the Apennines, and the commune runs east into the Valnerina, where the Velino plunges into the Nera at the Cascate delle Marmore. The Anfiteatro Fausto and the Lancia di Luce mark the old town and the new.

If Terni is where you belong, wear it for the rivers, the steelworks and the saint who made it the city of love.
