Vistula bridges
Vistula River Museum
railway junction
Tczew stands on the west bank of the Vistula, a short way south of Gdańsk Bay, and the river has defined it from the start. A Pomeranian duke moved his residence here to control traffic on the water, and for centuries the town was a busy river port and a centre of the grain trade. It is the largest town of Kociewie and remains the biggest railway junction in northern Poland.
There is a particular weight to Tczew that visitors pick up quickly. Its bridges over the Vistula played a key role at the very start of the German invasion of Poland, and during the war the town held a transit camp for expelled Poles. That same ground is now home to the Muzeum Wisły w Tczewie, devoted to the history of Poland's longest river, with the Centrum Konserwacji Wraków Statków nearby. The Old Town keeps its medieval Gothic churches, and the Kościół pw. Podwyższenia Świętego Krzyża is the one locals name first.
To know the river museum, the bridges and the Wiatrak holenderski is to know Tczew – and that is something worth wearing.
