Fontana del Rosello
Piazza d'Italia
Pleasant climate
By the Fontana del Rosello, water has been running for as long as anyone in Sassari can remember, and the fountain is still the image most people from here would pick for their town. Sassari — Tàtari in Sardinian — is the second city of the island, a university town and an archbishop's seat, and an American weather magazine once placed its climate among the most pleasant in the world: mild, damp winters and warm, dry summers kept fresh by the wind.
The Fontana del Rosello is only the start. Up in the centre the neoclassical Piazza d'Italia and the Teatro Civico give the centre its tone, the Pinacoteca nazionale di Sassari and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Giovanni Antonio Sanna hold the art and the deep past of the area, and the Giardini Pubblici give the town a green room for slow afternoons. Beyond the streets, valleys and gorges cut into the limestone plateau, among vegetable gardens, olive groves and woods.
For anyone who has left, coming home means the walk to the Rosello and the sound of the water, exactly where it always was.
