miners' bell tower
At the northern edge of the Upper Silesian industrial region, where the lowland meets the Silesian Highlands on a low ridge, Tarnowskie Góry looks south towards Bytom and Katowice. The Stoła winds through its outlying districts, and the town keeps a quieter rhythm than the big cities next door.
The Zabytkowa Kopalnia Srebra is where its story starts. Silver, lead and zinc were mined here for centuries, and the old mine and its underground water system are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Up in the centre, the Dzwonnica Gwarków, the miners' bell tower, still keeps watch over the streets, while the Park Kunszt, with its old lime trees, and the Park Redena offer shade. Even the name points underground: in Old Polish, góry meant mines.
If you know the way from the bell tower to the park without thinking, this map is already yours.
