Vistula banks

Did you know that Tarnobrzeg stretches so far along the Vistula that its northern edge meets the town of Sandomierz? It lies on the east bank of the river, in the Sandomierz Basin, and it is one of the largest towns in Poland by area. That size came late: when Tarnobrzeg suddenly became the capital of a new province, it took in the surrounding villages one by one, Machów, Dzików, Miechocin, Wielowieś, Sielec and Sobów among them.

Zamek Tarnowskich w Tarnobrzegu stands for the family who founded the town and gave it its name. For centuries Tarnobrzeg stayed small, until the rich sulphur deposits around it turned it into the centre of an industrial area after the war. Muzeum Przemysłu Siarkowego tells that chapter, and most of the town as it looks today was built in those years. Now the lake beach, Plaża Jezioro Tarnobrzeskie, is where summer happens, and the town is a railway hub with lines heading towards Dębica, Rzeszów, Stalowa Wola and Sandomierz.

If you grew up here, the map holds the river, the castle, the lake and the long road from one end of town to the other.
