Viking-age village
Amager Fælled
Danish hip hop
When the ground around Tårnby Torv was dug up for the motorway and the Øresund Bridge, archaeologists found signs that people had lived here as far back as the Viking Age. Tårnby Kirke dates from the twelfth century, and in the Middle Ages the parish belonged to the Bishop of Roskilde before it passed to the Crown. Later, King Christian II invited Dutch settlers to Amager, and Tårnby, like neighbouring Dragør, still carries traces of their culture.
Kastrupgårdsamlingen and Storkestenen belong to the local map, and Tårnby Torv has its own chapter in the story as the birthplace of Danish hip hop. Around them, the old farming village became a suburb during the twentieth century: Tårnby Villaby grew up along Amagerbrogade, the fields gave way to row houses and gardens, and only small patches of farmland survive in the far south. To the west lies Amager Fælled, a protected area for walks and birdwatching, while the airport, Saltholm and Peberholm lie to the east.
For anyone who grew up here, the map holds the whole island in miniature: the square, the common, the runways and the sea on both sides.
