About Taranto

Known for

City of two seas

Known for

Magna Graecia

Known for

Italian navy base

When the Ponte di San Francesco di Paola swings open, the old town of Taranto shows what it really is: an island between two seas, with the Castello Aragonese at its tip. Spartan exiles founded the city as Taras, and it grew into one of the great cities of Magna Graecia, home to thinkers such as Archytas; centuries later, under the Normans, it became the capital of the Principality of Taranto.

No other Italian city has quite this geography. The Cheradi Islands shelter the Mar Grande, where dolphins and other cetaceans live close to the commercial port, while the Mar Piccolo, the inner bay, is known for fishing and mussel farming. The Italian navy has its main base here, and the MAR.TA Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Taranto holds one of the largest collections from Magna Graecia.

If Taranto is yours, wear it for the two seas and for a past that runs all the way back to Sparta.
