Industrial heritage

Tampere sits on a narrow neck of land between two lakes, Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi, joined by the Tammerkoski rapids that tumble from one to the other right through the city centre. It is the largest inland city in the Nordic countries and the main centre of the Finnish Lakeland, and its red-brick mills along the water are a reminder that the rapids once powered Finnish industry.

For many, Tampere means the sound of that water and the steam of a sauna: the city has been declared the Sauna Capital of the World for having more public saunas than anywhere else. Summers bring Särkänniemi, the amusement park, and winters bring ice hockey, where Ilves and Tappara divide loyalties. Museokeskus Vapriikki and Työväenmuseo Werstas keep the mill-town past alive, and the nickname Manse, from Manchester, still sticks.

If you grew up crossing the rapids on the way to school or watching the lakes freeze over, the map draws that same strip of land between the waters, the shape you have known all along.
