three lakes
krówki fudge
dukes' castle
On 15 September 1423, the 'great day of Neustettin', the Pomeranian dukes, the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order and King Eric VII of Denmark, Norway and Sweden met in this lakeside town. Szczecinek, founded in 1310 by Duke Wartislaw IV, has sat between water ever since: Lake Trzesiecko and Lake Wielimie on either side, the Nizica running through the middle.
The town brings back simple things: walks along the shore of the Trzesiecko, an Old Town that came through the Second World War largely intact, and krówki, the soft fudge sweets made here. It is a busy railway junction on the Poznań – Kołobrzeg line, with one of the oldest museums and one of the oldest high schools in Pomerania.
Put the Zamek Książąt Pomorskich w Szczecinku on the map you wear, and you carry seven centuries of the town with you.
