Szczecin sits on the Oder just south of the Szczecin Lagoon, spread over both banks and the large islands between the river's branches, with Dąbie Lake on its eastern side and the German border only a short drive away.
The Zamek Książąt Pomorskich, the Ducal Castle, is where the city's long story is easiest to read: Pomeranian dukes, then Swedes, then Prussians, and finally Poland again after the Second World War. Down by the river the port and the shipyards keep working, while the Brama Portowa and the Pałac pod Globusem remind you of grander days. The forests close in from every side, the Wkrzańska Heath among them, so a walk in the woods never needs a long journey.
It is a city of water, ships and quiet streets, and of people who protested and signed the agreement that led to Solidarity. Arrive back over the Oder and you know you are home.
