Sykkylvsfjorden
Sykkylven is known for furniture. Furniture making, woodworking and mechanical engineering are what Aure, the municipal centre, lives on, and the Møbelmuseet, part of the Sunnmøre Museum Foundation, tells that story right here in the village.
Aure lies on the eastern shore of the Sykkylvsfjorden, where the Grebstaddalen valley opens onto the water and the Aureelva runs out from Andestadvatnet through the centre. Across the bridge to the west lies Ikornnes, and Straumgjerde is further south. The name Aure comes from an old word for gravel, and excavations at Auremarka have uncovered an Iron Age farm. After a great fire, the centre was rebuilt in blocks of brick buildings, and Sykkylven Church stands in Aure. Sykkylven Naturmuseum and the peak of Aurenakken are close at hand.
Come back along the fjord, see the church and the furniture works, and you know you are home.
