Huta Florian
coal and zinc
dense, close-knit town
Schron Dowodzenia OWŚ, an old command shelter, is one of the reminders that Świętochłowice has stood on a frontier more than once. The town was first mentioned in the early fourteenth century, when it was really two villages, Małe and Duże Świętochłowice, within the Piast Duchy of Bytom. It passed to Bohemia, then to Prussia, and in the plebiscite after the First World War its districts split: Świętochłowice itself voted for Germany, while Chropaczów, Lipiny and Piaśniki chose Poland. All of them joined the re-established Polish state together.
What lingers is the feeling of a place built by work. Coal and zinc turned the village into an industrial settlement, and the old Huta Florian ironworks still runs today, even though the coal mines have closed. Squeezed between Bytom, Ruda Śląska and Chorzów on the Rawa, it is the smallest city with county rights in Poland and one of the most densely populated. Osiedle Kaufhaus and Kościół pw. Świętej Barbary are part of that close-knit map.
Wherever life has taken you since, these few square kilometres are still home.
