Książ Castle nearby
In 1847 Gustav Becker opened a small clockmaker's workshop in Świebodzice, and within a few years it had grown into a clock factory known all over the world. The town's German name, Freiburg, meant a free castle, and its Polish one comes from the Old Polish word for freedom.
The place has a gentle, hillside feel. It sits at the foot of the Wałbrzych Foothills on the River Pełcznica, right on the edge of the Książański Park Krajobrazowy, close to Książ Castle. Walk past the Baszta obronna or the Pałac Wdów and the old market town is still there under the everyday bustle, with trains rolling in on one of the first lines built towards the Sudetes.
Kościół pw. Świętego Mikołaja, consecrated in 1228, has watched over the town for centuries. And for anyone with a Becker clock ticking at home, a map of Świebodzice is a fitting companion to it.
