About Svortland

Bømlo's centre

Known for

Storavatnet lake

Known for

Bremnes Church

Svortland wraps around Storavatnet, a lake in the north-central part of the island of Bømlo, and the village has grown up on every side of it. County Road 542 runs through the middle, and Rubbestadneset lies a few kilometres to the east.

The position has made it the island's centre. Svortland is the administrative centre of Bømlo Municipality, home to the municipal services, a medical centre, a school, a community centre and many shops, as well as Bømlo kulturhus. For a long time the place went by another name, Bremnes, after the local church that still stands here, while a farm called Sortland gave the area its other name. The two lived side by side until 1997, when the municipal council settled on Svortland. The name itself comes from an old word for the blackbird.

Svortlandsparken, the park that carries the village's own name, is the green heart of the island's busiest place. For anyone who has met friends there after school, it is reason enough to wear Svortland.
