Have you ever stood on the slopes of Mont Valérien at dusk and picked out the Eiffel Tower beyond the Bois de Boulogne? Suresnes gives its people that view, a whole city spread out across the Seine, and it rarely grows old.

The feeling this town leaves is one of layers. Vines once covered these hills and open-air dance halls lined the riverbanks; then came aircraft and car factories, and later the garden city built under the mayor Henri Sellier. Above it all stands the Forteresse du Mont-Valérien, a place of grief and pride, where the Mémorial de la France combattante hosts a ceremony every year on 18 June. The Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial lies nearby, and the Musée d'Histoire Urbaine et Sociale - MUS keeps the story of everyday lives in a working town.
